Call for Papers
27-31 Luglio 2020, Trent, Italy
The Communion and Law Network and Sophia Center for Research on Politics and Human Rights are organising the first United World Summer School in Trent in July 2020 entitled: Be Human, Be Universal, Be Effective: Pathways to Human Rights.
If you would like to build this program with us, the organising commission is opening a ‘Call for Papers’ with two questions:
Question 1
a. Today’s obstacles to the implementation of human rights: what are the causes?
b. Can the principle of fraternity contribute to the realization of universal human
rights?
Question 2
a. Do you find in your country examples of "good practices" to guarantee the
protection of human rights or to contribute to a peaceful resolution of conflicts?
b. Do you know good practices that make the Right to Peace possible?
• Methodology:
personal contributions and dialogue between participants open to multiculturalism and its challenges; workshops, plenary sessions with law professors and experts, reflections, case studies, and exchange on "good practices".
• Contents:
a local and universal look at today's human rights, beyond any ideology and in response to the wounds of humanity; focus on some human rights in particular; and good practices of respect and recognition of human rights in the participants' countries of origin.
• Goal:
a new prospective on the human person and its dignity; working together, in dialogue, to search for a possible "common and universal" understanding of fundamental human rights. We would like to contribute to "transforming our world" (UN - Agenda 2030 for sustainable development), so that today's dream of humanity as one family becomes a reality.
Why this Summer School?
A demanding question emerged at the International Conference Human Rights in the Contemporary World: achievements, omissions, negations (Pontifical Gregorian University, Roma, 10-11 December 2018)
Is there still hope for the realization of human rights today?
In this Conference, held on the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 25th Anniversary of the World Conference (1993), Vienna Declaration and Program of Action, diplomats, academics and experts from all over the world met there to review an essential issue:
If the foundation of human rights does not come from the State, but lies in man himself, what is needed for their implementation today?
Is a new Universal Declaration or a new Vienna Declaration needed?
Given the many violations of human rights in the world and the oppressions of entire groups of people, it seems to us the answer is expressed in these words:
We need the courage to commit ourselves, the courage to think and to speak!
Today, in spite of the many challenges, the epochal migrations, the new poverty, the words of Chiara Lubich at the UN still resonate:
“…to be present wherever peace is compromised, the world’s equilibrium
is threatened, human rights are violated, or development is reduced to a
far-off objective”.
“… giving humanity its highest dignity; a dignity which lies in being not a
collection of peoples living side by side and frequently in conflict with one
another, but rather in being a single people, enriched by one another's
diversity and safeguarding each one’s identity”.
“The goals and activities of the United Nations attest to the fact that peace
today has new names. And it requires, first of all, a concerted effort on
everyone's part”.
Chiara Lubich
New York, 28 May 1997
• The horizon:
today in the world there are behaviours that constitute the most serious attacks to dignity and integrity of the human person to the point of create "new slavery" of creating new forms of "enslavement", which in the digital age take on multiple aspects.
• The challenges:
there are many forms of this widespread phenomenon including: exploitation in the workplace in inhuman conditions, exploitation of prostitution, violence and abuse even on minors, trafficking of human beings and organs at the cost of human lives; in the name of profit. Many are the crimes that offend humanity. Many are the people "excluded", often made "products" of a culture of waste, people sold or given away, almost as if they were goods or property of someone. The dignity, connatural to each one, does not generate equal recognition in the value of every human being.
• A step:
what we now know as "third world war in pieces"1 has the most various names: war of interests, war for money, war for the resources of nature, war for the domination of peoples. War because...peace is not built! And the peace demands a first step: justice.
